CHAPTER 32
Lynx
Branok and I had slipped out of the camp early in the morning to hunt our father. The others would know where we had gone.
We had to do this ourselves.
We met with one of our spies who had word for us, then crept through the city, seeking our fatherâs telltale magic. He could never resist using it for long. It was his great power over others.
Branokâs new mark was on his throat, visible creeping up from his collar. My own mark was lower, hidden on my chest.
âI suppose Honor found a way she can always tell us apart,â I said lightly.
âI suppose so. Now thereâs no pretending we arenât hers.â
âSome of us never wanted to pretend.â
Branok cast a sideways glance at me. âIs something bothering you, Lynx?â
I reached the ladder onto the rooftop of the house adjacent to the place where Joachim was staying, and began to climb. To our right was the city wall, and once I had climbed high enough to see over it, the river carved away on the other side, like a natural moat. It was bright blue and blinding.
It was easier to speak to my brother when I didnât have to look at the face that was just like mine⦠even though underneath, Branok and I were nothing alike.
âDid you know she was going to make a deal with Ebba? Did you know she was going to take the Scourge crown?â Honor had confided in my brother, but not in me, and that bit into my soul.
He hesitated. âOur relationship with Honor is different. All of us have a different relationship with her.â
I reached the rooftop and clambered over, turned and faced him. He joined me, looking uncomfortable, though I wasnât sure if it was because Branok secretly hated heights when he didnât have wings or because he hated this conversation. Perhaps both.
âAnd youâre the one she tells her secrets?â I demanded.
He smirked. âGods, no. She would tell you her secrets. Youâre the one she trusts with that kind of thing. No, she tells me her plans. Because she knows I wonât try to stop her.â
âYou arenât as protective of her as the rest of us.â It had rankled at me for a long time, because it felt like Branok didnât care about her as we did.
âI believe in her,â he said simply.
âSo do I!â
âItâs different,â he said. âI canât hold her too tightly, because sheâd stop being who she is. And thatâs what I love about her mostâwho she is, wild and reckless.â
âWhich is great, until sheâs dead.â
Branok spread his arms. âI canât argue with you about this, Lynx. We see her differently. Thereâs a reason she needs both of us.â
His words blistered. I couldnât shake the feeling we were all careening toward something terrible, something that would steal Honor away from us forever and drag her into the underworld.
All I wanted was for my twin to be at my side, making sure she was safe. Instead I didnât trust him to protect her from her own selflessness.
